Healthcare Working Group

Healthcare providers are uniquely positioned as a voice of authority in their practice and as advocates in the community. The role of the healthcare provider in addressing the childhood obesity epidemic is to: Assess, Prevent, Treat, and Advocate. The Healthcare working group will engage all of our community’s healthcare providers (physicians, mid-level providers, nurses, lactation consultants, dietitians, PT, pediatric dentists, psychologists) to:

1) Disseminate the Foster Healthy Weight in Youth resources to healthcare providers and track outcomes. Promote the resources to WIC, Milkworks, Cedars, and other community groups working with children's nutrition and physical activity.

2) Support breastfeeding in the community through professional development, expansion of current programs, developing culturally appropriate programs, advocating for policies and consistent messaging.

3) Develop a multidisciplinary intervention curriculum.

Priorities for healthcare working group for 2012:

• Focus on integrating early childhood obesity prevention resources into practices.

• Professional development, including workshops for healthcare providers regarding nutrition and early feeding practices.

• Develop a family-based curriculum and run a community-wide healthy family challenge.

• Establish a referral network of dietitians to be used by primary care physicians.
