Teach a Kid to Fish is a physician-directed 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission in partnership with community members, to prevent and reduce obesity by empowering Lincoln children and families to eat healthy and be active.

In 2008, increasingly concerned with the growing epidemic of childhood obesity and challenged to prevent and reduce obesity in her own patients, Dr. Karla Lester, a community pediatrician, left her practice to create Teach a Kid to Fish, a public health collaborative initiative.

The board of directors of Teach a Kid to Fish is comprised of key stakeholders from the community including the Lincoln Lancaster County Health Department, Lincoln Public Schools, Lancaster County Medical Society, physicians, business leaders, dietitians and policy experts.

Teach a Kid to Fish focuses on building relationships with community organizations and leaders. The organization measures baseline data objectifying the local need and health disparities and works on sustainable projects in the areas of healthcare and school systems.
