History

In 2008, increasingly concerned with the growing epidemic of childhood obesity and challenged to prevent and reduce obesity in her own patients, Dr. Karla Lester, a community pediatrician, left her practice to create Teach a Kid to Fish, a public health collaborative initiative.

Teach a Kid to Fish focuses on building relationships with community organizations and leaders. The organization measures baseline data objectifying the local need and health disparities and works on sustainable projects in the areas of healthcare and school systems.

In the Spring of 2016, Teach a Kid to Fish was acquired by Children's Hospital & Medical Center as a part of Children's Center for the Child & Community. Housed at Nebraska Innovation Campus,Children's Center for the Child & Community is a statewide initiative whose mission is to empower communities to value and support the health, safety, and well-being of every child.
