One thing all families have in common is the power to create a solid foundation built upon the bonds of love and care that can last a lifetime for their children. Sadly, according to the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, we are raising the first generation of youth who will live sicker and shorter lives than their parents. Parents and guardians have a vital role in modeling a healthy lifestyle for their children. To say let’s eat well and exercise is not enough-it requires actually doing so to instill that message in children-doing it together is even better. Exercising together as a family, grocery shopping, cooking and sharing family mealtimes are all important activities that serve as building blocks for children’s future healthy lives.

According to the Trust for America’s Health, Nebraska ranks as having the 21st highest percent of obese and overweight children in the U.S. Obese children face a myriad of health, emotional and social consequences as a result of the childhood obesity epidemic. Parents and guardians are essential stakeholders when it comes to reversing this trend.
